White working-class boys less likely to achieve potential?

December 18th, 2008

It’s interesting to watch the debate caused by a government study into aspirations among young people: http://www.cypnow.co.uk/news/869689/White-working-class-boys-less-likely-achieve-potential/

It appears that parents now have higher aspirations for their daughters than their sons, and white working class boys from ex-industrial areas have the lowest aspirations. It’s a terrible shame, but an inescapable fact, that parents can have such a negative impact on their children. I agree with the YMCA’s comment that we need to address this by broadening their horizons. Which is why Fire Me Up aims to offer new experiences and a new peer group, to challenge participants’ perspectives on life.
