With our 2017 Channel Challenge upcoming, we wanted to feature the stories of some of those involved – beginning with long time supporter, Alastair Greener! With a crazy passion for scaling mountains, Alastair’s continuing this trend in fine form for our challenge this July. Hear more about it below!
Do you want to kick things off by introducing yourself?
I’m a TV Presenter & Communications Trainer. I’ve worked on some very interesting projects over the years including most recently a documentary on healthcare in Uganda. I mainly present corporate videos and lead training programmes that help people communicate more confidently and effectively. I live just 20 minutes from Swindon, and when I’m not working am a keen walker, so this challenge is a great opportunity achieve something while raising much needed funds for Inner Flame
Tell us about your challenge – what’s involved and who are you doing it with?
We are a group of eight who will be doing the Three Peaks Challenge. This involves climbing the three highest peaks in Scotland (Ben Nevis – 1,345m), England (Scafell Pike – 978m) and Wales (Snowdon -1085m) in just 24 hours including travelling time! We’ll begin at the bottom of Ben Nevis at 7am on Sunday the 2nd of July 2017, and hope to be at the bottom of Snowdon, (having climbed all three peaks), by 7am the next day. The challenge is of course about fitness, but it’s also about logistics, as the time taken to drive between the peaks is crucial to our success. Fortunately, we have two volunteers who’ll drive the 467 miles between each mountain, which will hopefully take no longer than 10 hours, leaving us with 14 hours to climb up and down all three peaks! This is certainly possible, but timing will be tight, so please wish us good weather and clear roads.
What experience of mountaineering have you had previously?
I’m a keen walker and have climbed the three peaks before – but separately and not in 24 hours! In 2015 I was also part of a group who climbed Kilimanjaro, which was an incredible experience and one I’ll never forget.
You’re doing this in conjunction with our Channel Challenge event, in which we challenge people to go the 21 miles of the English Channel in any sport throughout July. Do you know what distance you’ll be covering on the Three Peaks?
It looks like we’ll be walking about 27 miles (half up and half down!)
We’re really grateful for you doing this in support of Inner Flame! What makes you want to undertake these challenges that raise money for us?
I first found out about Inner Flame in 2015 and immediately saw the real value of their work. I realise I was very lucky to have grown up in a great environment on my parents’ farm in north Cornwall, but know that there are many youngsters who aren’t as fortunate for many different reasons. By working with the talented & dedicated Inner Flame team, I hope whatever I raise can help make a difference to the lives of youngsters, who just need a helping hand to reach their full potential.
Where can people keep a track of your training and efforts?
I’ll be posting updates on our training and the Challenge itself on Twitter – @alastairgreener and will try and periscope at the top of each peak!
And lastly, where can people donate?
Yes please donate whatever you can – you will know how much a difference it’ll make if you do. Here’s my fundraising page:- https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/alastairgreener1
Thank you so much.
